Getting Over Social Anxiety

angry-manSocial anxiety is a pain in the axx….but you know that already or you wouldn’t be here.  Getting over social anxiety is a long hard process, unless you get a good coach or self help program, and practice being sociable.

Here are some quick tips that you can use to make getting over social anxiety easier for you:

Optimistic Visualizations.  Think positively.  Imagine someone you would like to meet.  Believe with you whole heart that you will meet that person in the near future.  Imagine you are having a wonderful conversation with your future friend.  Your laughing, having fun, and you know this person is a good friend.

Practice optimistic visualizations often.  A minimum of once when waking, once when falling asleep, and once in the middle of the day.  The more you do this and really feel yourself in this situation positively, the faster it will come to pass.

Breathing Exercises for Relaxation.  At any point during your visualizations you feel uptight, nervous, or panicky, just focus on slowing down your breathing. To focus on your breathing is to slow your mind and physical sensations down.

There are many different interpretations of this exercise from breath in to a 4 count, hold to 8, then breath out for 4.   Another technique is breathing in alternating nostrils.

I prefer taking a comfortable deep breath while visualizing  positive thoughts and images entering my body.  Then I breath out, exhaling negative thoughts through my mouth.  It’s like the positive thoughts come into my body, kicks the negative thoughts butt, and kicks them right out of my body.

You know it’s working when you begin to relax.  Try this anytime you feel panicky.

Go Somewhere.  Get out of your comfort zone.  Take baby steps.  Maybe you can only walk a quite block, or maybe you can go to a quite park.  After getting comfortable with this, take the next step.  Visit the mall.  Walk down a semi-busy street. After that, maybe you might try talking with the store clerk.  Ask directions, or make small talk.

Get out and do something, then something else progressing to becoming more socialable.  It will take time and lots of practice but keep going.

Get Help.  Ask a coach, or therapist to help you to become more socialable.  Friends can also help.  If you feel you can’t do this just yet check out amazon to find a couple of good self-help books.  Sean Cooper also has an excellent program, The Shyness & Social Anxiety System.  The most important thing is to educate yourself and take action.  Work the program.  You will not get better if you stay home and lay around.
