Seven Tips: How to Get Rid of Social Anxiety

Tip 1:  Change your perception. As a person with social anxiety, in social situations, you are likely to believe others are watching and speaking about you.  Your mind fills with thoughts of negativity and you become uncomfortable.  By changing your perception of your surroundings, you’ll find it easier to relax and enjoy yourself.

Tip 2:  Make a list of 10 social events that make your feel socially anxious, then give each event a rating from 1-10, with 1 being most comfortable and 10 being the least comfortable or panicky.   Challenge yourself to face each of the social anxious events.  Start with the lowest rated event and work up to the highest.  Each challenge should be a little harder than the previous one. Work your through the list until you have complete the entire list.

Tip 3:  Practice awareness, relaxation, self-talk, and visualization:  Wikipedia.org defines awareness as the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects, or sensory patterns.  Once you gain awareness of social anxiety and panic attacks, you then you will be able to identify the onset of panic and better be able to handle the situation.  Relaxation is critical to calm yourself down during one of these episodes and can be accomplished by slowing down your breathing.  Inhale ad exhale slowly, while using self-talk statements such as:  I am calm, I am safe and secure, I am in control.  You may also use visualization to calm yourself down.

Tip 4:  Self acceptance: Learn to accept yourself the way you are, with anxiety.  Once you have accepted yourself, and able to love yourself despite your anxieties, you will gain a feeling of peace.  At this point you will be able to move forward, learning to leave anxiety behind.

Tip 5:  Exercise:  Whether it’s going to the gym or taking a walk around the neighborhood, any type of exercise is good for getting rid of social anxiety and panic attacks. A significant improvement has been found in people that exercise 3-5 times a week for several weeks.  If you don’t like exercising, then any activity you enjoy will also help with anxieties.
