Social anxiety come be so extreme that some people cannot leave home, or hold a job. And for those people that can hold a job, social anxiety may keep them from promotions. No matter what extreme your social anxiety is, it can be “fixed”.

 

So what is social anxiety really?

Social anxiety begins in our thoughts. The boss mentions a party, at his house, this Friday night, you must bring a date, each person much give a speech, and it’s mandatory. Today is Monday.

You have all week, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes in every hour, and you’re going to spend most of this time dreading, worrying, panicing about this party, your date, and the speech you must give. Thoughts fly through your mind so fast you don’t even notice them, all you feel is panic.

In the above scenerio the thoughts could be any of follow:

  • I won’t fit in, I will feel like an outcast
  • I don’t have anything to say, people will think I’m stupid
  • People will stare and notice I’m nervous when I give my speech, they will judge me
  • I’m just not as good as these people, I shouldn’t be there, or even have this job.

And so on.

A social anxious person in a social situation may feel uncomfortable and have thoughts that are not helpful and untrue. Many people with social anxiety know this, but are still unable to fix or change their thoughts.

So, how to fix social anxiety, and stop these thoughts. Move your attention to outside yourself. People with social anxiety are focusing on how they feel, and on how other people are responding.

In a social situation focus on other people and the subject matter. Taking the attention off of yourself and bringing outward will reduce social anxiety tremendously.
