Step 2- Breathing and Relaxation:  Deep breathing relaxes the body, reduces tension, and also relieves stress, and when in the mist of a panic attack or dealing with social anxiety the number one thing is to relax.  So, practice deep breathing before you need it.

Inhale deeply, filling your belly with oxygen, to the count of 4.  Hold the oxygen to the count of 4.  The exhale, like you were blowing out a candle, lips pursed, to the count of 8.

Step 3- Event Planning:  Create a list of 3 simple events you have been avoiding due to social anxiety.  Number the events from the easiest to the hardest.  Depending on your severity of social anxiety your list may have: speak to the cashier at the local drugstore, or have a get together for your closest 5 friends, or host the next tupperware party.  The point is to start.  Begin with the easiest task on your list, and work your way up to the hardest task until you complete your entire list.

Step 4- Action:  Take action.  You can’t get stop the social anxiety if you don’t face your fears.  The fear is going to be there, but what is the worst thing that can happen.  And if it does happen, so what, move on.  In most instances, your worst fears will never be realized.  Take your 1st task from step 3, and challenge yourself to accomplish at least one task each week.

Step 5- Repeat:  Once you complete these steps, make another list of events you have been avoiding or any situation you would like to challenge yourself in.  You must keep practicing.  Facing your fears over and over again eventually makes them obsolete, they no longer exist.

Keep practicing, start with your easier fears and challenge yourself to face them.  You will become stronger and more confident, then you can face your more challenging fears, until you finally complete your list.  Begin again, make another task list of fears you want to face.

You must practice over and over again.  If you don’t fears may return, so keep practicing.  I hope complete this exercise, it’s easy to read it and do nothing, but the people that overcome social anxiety are the ones that face their fears.
